I read this book directly after reading the partner book on the battle of Isandlwana How can men die better therefore it made perfect sense and was a great read Had I started with this book I would have found the last third a bit confusing as you need the detail from the Isandlwana book to contextualise some of the debate In fairness the author does state this in the forward of the Rorke s Drift book That aside I would highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the Anglo Zulu War or general military history as it explains how units in this period were organised and operated It is a must if you intend visiting the battle sites.

A step by step report of the events leading up to, during and after the defense of Rorke s Drift A demonstration of what sound tactics and disciplined well trained soldiers achieved against the odds Difficult to put down.

i have read many books on the zulu war and this has to be oneof the best, it of course helps that he was once the co of the royal regimentof wales of which the south wales borders were merged into, great sheerfantastic book, not only does he give the details of individualdefenders but names the soldiers fallen at isandhlwana rourkesdrift and survivors

A thoroughly interesting read It was helped enormously by the fact that the author could use his military knowledge to explain clearly how events unfolded.A rarity, a non fiction book I could not put down.

I highly recommend this book An informative well paced account of the heroic deeds in South Africa Being a military man himself, the author can draw on a wealth of experience from the point of view of the man on the ground, the ordinary soldier At the end of the book he even gives you tips on visiting the country and battlefield areas If you loved the film Zulu then buy this book and you won t be disappointed.
